MOOD DISORDERS

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), often referred to as clinical depression, is a psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. It goes beyond the normal fluctuations in mood that people commonly experience.

Individuals with MDD may also experience a range of other symptoms, including changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive sleep), fatigue or loss of energy, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

MDD can significantly affect a person's ability to function in daily life and can cause considerable emotional and physical distress. It is essential to seek professional help for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options. Treatment for MDD often involves a combination of therapy (such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and, in some cases, medication, to help individuals manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is a psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy levels, and activity levels. These mood episodes typically alternate between periods of mania and depression.

During manic episodes, individuals experience an elevated mood, increased energy levels, racing thoughts, impulsivity, decreased need for sleep, inflated self-esteem, and a heightened sense of grandiosity. They may engage in risky behaviors and have difficulty maintaining focus or completing tasks.

Depressive episodes, on the other hand, involve persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide.

Bipolar Disorder can significantly impact various aspects of a person's life, including relationships, work, and overall well-being. It is crucial to seek professional help for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options. Treatment for bipolar disorder often involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy, including strategies for mood stabilization and management of symptoms.
